Lucky for us, we have plenty of data to go on over the last ten years of Knicks coaches. Since 2015, we’ve seen six different guys at the helm for New York. Unfortunately for us, we haven’t necessarily seen very many trands emerge from those six coaches.
The first trend we looked for, especially as it gets more popular in the NBA, is a former player. If you look at those six coaches, three of them have played in the league – Jeff Hornacek, Kurt Rambis and Derek Fisher. However, what you’ll notice about that list of three is that it doesn’t include any of their most three recent choices. It seems like management has moved away from that mode, which helps us cancel out quite a few names on the list. Sam Cassell, Patrick Ewing, and Mark Jackson can probably all be comfortably crossed out.
Another thing we looked for was whether the Knicks would be an experimental team – trying out a new coach with no NBA experience. Only two of the six coaches in the last ten years have been first timers. When you consider where they are in their competitive cycle – ready to win now – I think we can trust they’ll want someone experienced in the professional game. As a result, I’m nixing bets on favorite Johnnie Bryant, college legend Jay Wright, and Chris Quinn (who actually should have been axed on the first criteria).
So when we eliminate so many of those names, there is one that seems to stand out amongst the others. Mike Budenholzer has won an NBA title as a head coach and four as an assistant. Twice he’s taken home coach of the year honors and he say behind Gregg Popovich for years. If the Knicks are serious about winning, this is the move for them.
Next Knicks Coach – Best Bet: Mike Budenholzer (+950)
