MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 29 3k6156
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Houston Astros 4i58
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daiken Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
Our first of two evening NRFI selections takes place in the Lone Star state. The Astros will look to put up the first blank frame for us as the Rays get their hacks. Tampa Bay has been a below average team at the dish this year. They rank 19th in both first inning scoring and scoring for the full game. I don’t like their chances of changing that narrative with Ryan Gusto on the rubber. While his season numbers don’t look great, that’s really due to a single bad outing. He’s currently on a stretch where he’s held six of his last seven opponents to two runs or fewer.
In the bottom of the inning, we’ll see the worst team in the majors when it comes to scoring in the first inning. The Astros are scoring 0.24 first inning runs per game, which is considerably behind the 29th ranked Blue Jays. They’ll face Shane Baz, who similarly doesn’t have great season-long numbers. However, he’s coming off a start against the Blue Jays, where he held them to one run over 5.2 innings. If we get that version of him here, he should have no problem for the first three outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 29: No (-130)
Washington Nationals vs. Seattle Mariners 3x513o
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – FS1
The Nationals get the first ups in our second NRFI effort. They’ve been a middle of the pack team when it comes to hitting this year – ranking 15th in runs per game. They’ll get to face Emerson Hancock, who has been pretty rough on the year. However, his numbers have started to settle down a bit. He’s allowed three or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts. On top of that, he’s been quite good in the first inning. He hasn’t allowed a first inning run in any of his last three starts.
The bottom of the inning should be less of a sweat. On one hand, you have perhaps the best strikeout pitcher in the majors dealing for the Nationals. MacKenzie Gore has 93 strikeouts on the year, which leads the majors. It also just so happens that he’ll be facing a team with strikeout issues. The Mariners are 24th in the majors in strikeouts at nearly nine per game. Even if he winds up in some trouble, he should be able to pitch himself out of it with some swing and miss stuff.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 29: No (-135)
