MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 25 1649g
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays 1m9
First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
George M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’ll kick off the top of the first with one of the worst teams when it comes to scoring in the first inning. The stagnant Blue Jays offense has been even worse in the first inning. They rank 28th in the league when it comes to that metric with just 0.31 first inning runs per game. They’re going to have another tough time on Sunday with Ryan Pepiot on the mount. He’s been solid this year with a sub-4.00 ERA. He’s been hit around a bit in each of his last two games, but prior to that he had kept opponents to two or fewer runs in three straight. Facing the Blue Jays is likely what he needs to get back to his ways.
Chris Bassitt is on the bump in the bottom of the first. He’s been lights out this year with a 2.83 ERA. Not only has he been good, but he’s been good lately. In his last two starts (11.2 innings), he’s only allowed one earned run. One of those two starts came against this Rays team. In that game he polished off 5.2 innings and struck out six – all while only allowing the one earned run. He should be able to get through the three outs we need from him in this one.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 25: No (-105)
Kansas City Royals vs. Minnesota Twins 1p3x3c
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
Toeing the rubber in the top of the first in this one is Bailey Ober. Ober may not have the season-long stats that we typically like in an NRFI, but he has been really good lately. In his last five starts, he’s only allowed more than one run once. He’s posted a 2.89 ERA in the month of May. It should be easy for him to keep that going against the Royals. They rank 28th in the league in runs scored with just 3.34 per game. I’ll count on Ober keeping his hot streak in tact in Minnesota Sunday.
The bottom of the first sees a better team at the plate. However, while the Twins have been better at the plate, they still rank in the bottom third of the league in runs scored and are below league average in the first inning. They’ll face Kris Bubic who is currently in the top ten of AL Cy Young odds. He has a 1.47 ERA and 61 strikeouts in just 61.1 innings. That should give us what we need to cap off this NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 25: No (-125)
