You’ve probably seen James Bond stroll into a casino, order a martini (shaken, not stirred), fire up a heater, and play baccarat with an attractive young woman. We’ve got good news and bad news for you. The bad news is that James Bond usually ended up physically fighting the young woman. The good news is that you can learn to play Baccarat without needing to be an international spy for MI6.

Also, Baccarat is one of the only games in the casino with rules that dictate when and how you get dealt additional cards. With Blackjack, you can choose whether or not you hit or stay. With Baccarat, the rules are pre-determined, so you’re essentially playing a guessing game. This is one of the few games in which a total novice can sit down and play just as well as a seasoned veteran.

What are the rules of Baccarat? z4sx

For a game known for intrigue, Baccarat is remarkably simple to learn and play. There are only three possible outcomes: a win for the player, a win for the banker, or a tie.

Step 1

Baccarat starts with a round of betting. You’re betting on which hand of two cards, yours or the banker’s, will be the closest to nine points.

Step 2

Two cards are dealt to each player, and two cards are dealt to the banker. The first card is dealt to the player face up, and the second card is dealt to the banker face up. Next, the third card goes to the player face up, and the fourth card goes to the banker face up. At the end of this round, the player and the banker should each have two cards.

Step 3

Next, the point totals for both hands are announced. This is where it gets a little tricky. Cards are scored on a points system. Face cards and 10s are worth zero points. Aces are worth one point. All other cards are worth their value. For example, a five of spades is worth five points.

However, if a total is more than 10, the point total is the second number in the total. For example, let’s say you’re dealt a six and an eight. The total is 14. That’s a four-point hand.

Step 4

If either the player or the banker has an eight or a nine, the game is over, and the hand closest to nine is the winner. This is a natural win.

Step 5

However, a third card can be dealt if a natural win doesn’t occur. The player will get dealt first, and then the banker second.

For example, let’s say you’re dealt an eight and a six and the banker is dealt an ace and a five. In this case, the player would have four points, and the banker would have six points. The player must stand on six- or seven-point hands, but since the player has five points, the player gets a third card. The player banker would want a four or five to get a hand that totals eight or nine points.

After the player is dealt, the banker gets dealt to. However, the banker’s third card depends on the player’s third card. The rules are as follows:

  • If the player’s third card is nine, 10, face-card, or an ace, the banker draws when he has 0-to-3 points, and stays with a hand worth 4-to-7 points.
  • If the player’s third card is an eight, the banker draws when he has 0-to-2 points, and stays with a hand worth 3-to-7 points.
  • If the player’s third card is six or seven, the banker draws when he has a hand worth 0-to-6 points, and stays with a seven-point hand.
  • If the player’s third card is four or five, the banker draws when he has a hand worth 0-to-5 points, and stays with a hand worth 6-to-7 points.
  • If the player’s third card is two or three, the banker draws when he has a hand worth 0-to-4 points, and stays with a hand worth 5-to-7 points.

Step 6

After the banker deals out the cards, they add up the hands. Bets are paid out or taken by the house at this step.

How do I bet on Baccarat? 66j4f

Betting rules can vary by casino, but the game traditionally comes with bets paying even money on player wins minus a 5% commission for the house. For example, you bet $10 that your hand will win, and you win the hand. The dealer would pay even money, but put a chip in a numbered box according to your seat. Before you leave, you’ll have to pay a 5% commission based on how many chips you have in your box. Let’s say you play 15 hands with 10 wins and five losses by the end of the night. You’ll need to pay a $2.50 commission on $10 bets.

You can also bet on a tie occurring, and this typically pays 8-to-1 at most casinos. However, betting on a tie is the worst bet on the board. This bet should be avoided. Ties are surprisingly rare, and it pays 8-to-1 for this exact reason. First, if you bet on your hand to win and a tie occurs, it’s a push. If you bet on a tie, and your hand wins, you lose money.

Keep in mind that all you’re doing is trying to guess whether your hand will be closer to nine, the banker’s hand will be closer to nine, or a tie will occur. Baccarat is a true guessing game without any real skill involved. You’re playing on luck, even if movies have made baccarat look really cool.

The only real betting advice on baccarat is to stay away from betting on a tie occurring.

Keep in mind that your time playing online or at a table shouldn’t cause additional stress. You get enough of that from work, family, and sports gambling.
