MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 20 336s20
Detroit Tigers vs. St. Louis Cardinals 3t6m10
First Pitch – 7:45 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first will be the place where we sweat the most. That’s not to say that Erick Fedde has been bad this year. In fact, he’s held a 3.44 ERA on the season and seems to be getting better with time. Over his last two starts (14.2 innings), he hasn’t allowed a single run. He’s also upped his strikeout numbers in that span, picking up 11. While the Tigers offense might be a tall task for him or any pitcher, they haven’t been as sharp lately. They’ve scored just eight total runs over the course of their last three games.
To close out the NRFI, we get the reigning AL Cy Young winner – Tarik Skubal. Skubal has been nothing short of brilliant in this short season. He has a 2.67 ERA and has fanned 71 batters in just 54.0 innings. If that’s not enough to love the NRFI here, you can trust that the Cardinals aren’t scoring all that much in the first inning. They currently rank 26th in the majors with just 0.33 first inning runs per game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 20: No (-140)
Kansas City Royals vs. San Francisco Giants 59g1x
First Pitch – 9:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The second NRFI I like on Tuesday is out on the bay. Hayden Birdsong toes the rubber first in this one. He isn’t much of a household name due to the fact that he’s been primarily working out of the bullpen. However, he’s managed a 2.31 ERA in doing so and has seen some longer outings when the Giants needed him. This is a good place for a start for him as the Royals have been ugly at the dish. They rank 24th in runs scored in the first inning and 27th in runs scored overall.
The bottom of the first will be the tougher of the two in this one. The Giants are a solid team when it comes to hitting – although they have been a bit worse when it comes to the first inning. They are just under league average with 0.47 first inning runs per game. Michael Lorenzen will be the one trying to drop that number down a bit. He comes in with a 3.76 ERA and he’s got himself on a bit of a roll as well. In his last five games, he’s held his opponents to one or fewer runs three times.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 20: No (-135)
