MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 19 6l1t48
Kansas City Royals vs. San Francisco Giants 59g1x
First Pitch – 9:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’re poised for a pitchers’ duel in San Francisco on Monday night and it all gets started with Robbie Ray. He’s been solid on the season, sporting a 3.04 ERA with 55 strikeouts in just 50.1 innings. He’s kept all his recent opponents in check and should have an easier time with this Royals lineup. They’ve been rough in the first inning, scoring just 0.38 runs per game in that frame. That puts them in 23rd in the majors, which is actually much better than their full game hitting. They have just 3.31 runs per game overall, which puts them in 28th.
The bottom of the inning will see a Giants squad who has been hitting much better than Kansas City. They rank in the top ten of runs scored, but are actually much worse in the first. They rank below league average scoring in the first and this pitching matchup should make matters much worse. Kris Bubic is on the shortlist for Cy Young candidates right now. While he doesn’t have the strikeout numbers he’d likely need, he does have a 1.66 ERA. Plus, he’s really limited the home runs – allowing just three all year. That fact should keep the ball in the park and our NRFI in tact.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 19: No (-160)
Los Angeles Angels vs. Athletics w4t11
First Pitch – 10:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Our later game might not have the surface value of the pitching we saw prior, but it does feature a couple of solid arms. JT Ginn is the first to hop in the bump. Three starts into his season, his ERA isn’t pretty. However, he was solid in his first two starts before he got hit around by Texas last time out. In those first two starts, he had a 3.60 ERA with 13 strikeouts in just 10.0 innings. The Angels rank 20th in first inning runs on the year, so even if they manage to get to him, it likely won’t be until after he records three outs.
Jose Soriano will try to wrap up our second NRFI. He’s brought his season ERA down to 3.46 on the year thanks to a couple of scoreless starts in his last three games. Those scoreless starts came against much better bats than what the Athletics are offering. He blanked the Tigers and the Padres over the last three. Given those facts, I think he should probably get the Athletics in check all night, and certainly for the first frame.
