MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 6 304g6p
Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Mets f173q

In Queens this afternoon, I like the NRFI between the Blue Jays and the Mets. Toronto ranks in the bottom third of the league in of runs per game. While the top of their order handles a lot of that load, I also think the pitching matchup won’t help them here. David Peterson came out of the gate hard this year. Against the Marlins in his first start, he threw 6.0 innings and struck out nine batters. He did allow a first inning home run, but then kept the Marlins quiet into the sixth.
For the home half, the Mets haven’t been scoring all that much in the first inning. They average 0.38 first inning runs per game, which is good enough for 21st in this short season. They’ll also have a tall task in front of them – literally. Big righty Bowden Francis seems to have settled right back into where he left off in 2024. After posting a 1.05 ERA in August, he put up a 2.16 ERA in September. He kept the Nationals scoreless into the sixth in his season debut as well, which gives me the faith that he can finish the NRFI.

Seattle Mariners vs. San Francisco Giants 34tk

Our evening game in San Francisco is all about the pitching. First we’ll get a look at flamethrower Jordan Hicks. He went 6.0 scoreless in his debut, striking out six Astros in the process. Only three guys reached base at all against him, and two of those were via walk. Seattle is hardly the team I expect to beat that trend. They have scored just one first inning run all year and currently rank 26th in the majors in runs per game.
The pitching on the other side is just as strong. Bryan Woo gets the ball for the Mariners – looking to close out our NRFI. He allowed just one run in his 6.0 innings of work in his season debut. The Giants’ bats have been better than the Mariners, which isn’t all that hard. However, it has been taking them a while to get going in games. They rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to first inning runs scored.
